Far off the beaten path in the badlands of eastern Utah lies a landscape that feels otherworldly. Formed from bentonite clay — ancient volcanic ash rich in iron oxides and minerals — the hills shift in color from deep rust to pale cream, their layered rings recording the slow work of geologic time.
